A RETAIL ON A 10.0 ACRE PARCEL JUST NORTH OF THE OAKBROOK CENTER MALL, WITH A HIGH DEGREE OF STREET VISIBILITY ALONG ILLINOIS ROUTE 83
A masterplan divided this site into three parcel to accommodate a bank/office building, restaurant, and this retail center. With a central storm-water detention pond as a focal point for the complex, the resulting layout created a building orientation challenge on the retail parcel. To maximize visibility and provide convenient parking for the stores, the retail building was essentially turned inside-out with main entrances facing away from the street frontage and toward the water feature. Loading and service functions along the roadside at the rear of the building were screened from view, and a simple exterior wall system of brick with a stone base allowed budgetary constraints to be met. Distinctive building entrances kept the drama front and center, and contemporary architectural cues were taken from the adjacent Oakbrook Center mall.
