53,986 SF RETAIL BUILDING WITH ROOF TOP PARKING ON A 1.9 ACRE SITE
Recognizing that aging, existing grocery stores were under-serving an important urban population segment, Dominick’s Finer Foods elected to replace targeted Chicago structures, with new flagship facilities. This new building is located on prominent a corner in the Edgewater community of Chicago, and its striking design has created a landmark presence in the neighborhood.
Featuring an exterior wall composed of horizontal planes with vertical accents at the two ground level entrances, the primary materials of brick, glass, painted precast and prefinished metal panels are arranged to highlight these entries as well as breakdown the scale of the building. The narrow profiles of the cantilevered roof structures and steel sunscreens add to the horizontal articulation, while vision glass at each entry and along the street frontages visually weaves together the interior of the store with the activity of the urban environment.
The project achieved LEED Silver Certification shortly after construction ended. Designed by MulvannyG2 Architecture with ARCHIDEAS as architect of record, the project participated in the City of Chicago’s Green Permit Program. The same team also collaborated on a new flagship 48,735 SF grocery store, on a 1.8 acre site, for the Lincoln Square neighborhood. Both locations continue to serve their respective communities under new brand ownership.
