A 3,000 SF HOME
Having functioned as a worship space for over 100 years, this chapel was re-purposed, restored, and renovated for use as a private residence. Challenged by crumbling masonry, uneven floors, and a leaky roof, the design sought to preserve the historic integrity of the building and retain its sense as a spiritual space while creating a comfortable living environment that the owner could call home. New freestanding construction, providing enclosure for essential first floor support spaces and a loft bedroom/bath above, was developed as an independent element within the former sanctuary in order to respect the purity of the volume. Areas of common brick were left exposed to accentuate the beauty of the tall Gothic arches at each end of the previous sanctuary, as well as to provide visual interest and arichness of texture within the home.
